About Bertie Heating & Air

Family-owned comfort you can feel good about

For 35+ years, Jim Bertie and the Bertie Air team have kept Gainesville and North Central Florida comfortable — one honest job at a time.

Our Story

A neighbor, not a call center

Bertie Heating & Air Conditioning has been a family-owned and operated HVAC contractor in Gainesville and North Central Florida since 1991 — more than 35 years under the Bertie name. Owner Jim Bertie has been in the trade for over 50 years, since he was 17 putting ductwork in homes in Haile Plantation. We have installed thousands of systems across the region, and we have kept customers for 30 and 40 years by doing the simple things right: showing up, telling the truth, and standing behind the work.

We sell reassurance and competence, not pressure. Owner Jim Bertie personally reviews every job, because the Bertie name is on the truck and on the line. When the office closes, the after-hours phone forwards to Jim and his wife — if your system fails at midnight, a real person answers and gets you taken care of. Whether it is that midnight breakdown or a planned high-efficiency upgrade, you get a team that treats your home like family.

How We're Different

We do the math most contractors skip

A full load calculation on every job

On every replacement we start over as if it were a brand-new home and run a load calculation — whole-house, and room-by-room when it matters — to find the exact capacity your home needs in BTUs, not a rule-of-thumb "ton" guess. Homes change: additions, remodels, new insulation and windows all change the size of system a house needs, and sometimes the ductwork has to be resized to match. A load calculation is actually required by the state of Florida, yet almost nobody does it. We do it before we do anything else.

We're educators first

Most people think an air conditioner is just "the thing on the wall that makes a hot house cold." There is far more to it, and we would rather teach you than sell you. We will walk you through sizing, SEER ratings (how much electricity a system uses across a year), and what actually lowers your bill, so you can make a good decision about what goes back in your home.

Equipment built for Florida

Air conditioners are engineered differently for different climates — the systems that belong in Florida are not the ones built for New York or Arizona. We install a lot of Trane because it is built for this environment, and for our heat and humidity we recommend high-efficiency inverter systems: they deliver the capacity of a conventional unit on a fraction of the electricity, with far better humidity control.
